Petropolis

The Emperor's Palace in Petropolis, Brazil Just an hour drive from Rio de Janeiro is the Cidad Imperial, or Imperial City, that was the former summer residence of the emperor Don Pedro. His son Don Pedro II developed and founded this city, now known as the Petropolis. It is now a pleasant mountain resort, located 2,400 miles above sea level. Cariocas love to escape to this area for a weekend during the summer because temperatures are cool and amicable and the air lacks the humidity it has in Rio.

The Petropolis offers a wonderful break of serenity from Rio de Janeiro's crazy-packed streets and beaches. A day trip is a common choice, but to really absorb the atmosphere of the town, it is suggested to stay at least one night.

Transportation
Getting to Petropolis from Rio by bus is simple: daily service, every 15 minutes until midnight, is offered and the ride is about an hour and 15 minutes.
Within the actual resort, all the sites in the historic center are within walking distance. However, if you want to leave the city center for outside attractions, a great way to get around is by a horse and buggy. Of course, there are also taxis, which can be called for or caught just about everywhere.
